Great Presentations!

Hey everybody!

Just wanted to say how much I liked the presentations this week.  Unfortunately, I couldn’t come on Wednesday, but I made it for Thursday’s and Friday’s presentations and came away really impressed.  While I didn’t get a chance to talk to everybody about their work, I’m pretty sure I tried each piece that I saw and they were very inspiring!  Hopefully some of us will take these ideas a little further and get them into a real gallery at some point in the new year…    Congrats everybody!!!

CHEERS!

I suppose I should post my reflection on my “What’s a Doc” presentation, featuring the 2006 film The Bridge.

I thought the presentation went pretty well, as much as I had hoped.  I now wish I had shown more from the film’s actual website to show the different people who had posted on the message board, with comments that vary in praise or criticism for the film.  I appreciated this assignment in the sense that I was able to take any documentary film and try to think of it in a new “new media” way.  I’m learning how important the role of interactivity can play in a piece, and can make it more effective–so taking The Bridge and expanding on ways that it could reach and engage a broader audience was fun.
The Bridge is a film that really affects people in different ways, and I think I should have prepared myself more for the ethical discussion is ultimately ended up generated, and perhaps I could have thought of a new media twist that would further run with the discussions that surround the film as well, more so than the content.
All in all I thought the presentation went well and am glad it generated some interesting discussion!

Hi all

Here is a new interactive tool from

Beauty is a Liar

liar

I wanted to post a link the to novel, Beauty is a Liar , written by the friend I collborated with in my new media final project (FYI the back cover has a photo the a girl in pointe shoes smushing her cake into the ground with her feet). As I mentioned yesterday VJK and I became friends in ballet school when we were 13 and, judging by her book and my thesis project, we’re clearly both still coming to terms with how our experiences affected us.

re-creation

here’s an audio slideshow, from the BBC, about a 21st century photographer who recreated a 19th century camera to mark the 150th anniversary of the death of Robert Howlett, a young British photographer who was poisoned by the mercury and arsenic in the emulsions he was using. Some very beautiful architectural/industrial photography, for those of you interested in such things.
